Swedish Massage
Swedish massage involves using 5 different strokes to ease pain and stiffness and promote relaxation. Dutch practitioner Johan Georg mezger (1838-1909) was the first to adopt the french names for the 5 basic strokes. The primary goal is to relax the entire body, this is accomplished by massaging the muscles with long gliding strokes towards the heart.
Effleurage consists of long, gliding, sweeping strokes administered with hands (both open palm and fists) and forearms.
Petrissage consists of kneading, rolling, wringing, and lifting strokes.
Friction is a stroke that is used to warm the muscle. The stroke is done by rubbing back and forth the length of the muscle.
|
Tapotement is a percussion stroke that rhythmically stimulates muscles, nerves, and circulation.
Vibration consists of rocking or shaking movements applied to one limb or to the entire body.
